Pick the form type first

Carrd separates three form jobs. A signup form, which requires Pro Standard or higher, captures visitor names and emails into a provider list. A contact form sends a message to you. Custom forms that integrate with automation tools or post to URLs are Pro Plus Advanced Forms. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason a "newsletter form" ends up in an inbox instead of a list. [1][2]

Setup steps, in order

Exact field names differ by provider; follow Carrd's signup form documentation for the one you choose. [2]

  • In your email provider, create the list, audience, group or form you want new subscribers in, and decide whether it uses double opt-in.
  • In Carrd, add a signup form element and choose the provider from the supported list.
  • Connect it with the credentials or identifiers the provider asks for; copy them from the provider dashboard rather than a tutorial.
  • Write a success message that tells people what happens next, for example "check your inbox to confirm".
  • Publish, then run the receipt test below.

The receipt test

Subscribe with an address you control and a recognisable name, such as "Test 13 Oct". Then check three places: the provider list shows the contact, the confirmation email (if double opt-in) arrives and its link works, and any welcome email sends. A Carrd success message only shows the form submitted; it does not prove the provider accepted the subscriber.

Repeat once on a phone. Then delete or tag the test contacts so they do not skew your list numbers. Our contact form delivery guide uses the same principle for messages.

Privacy and consent basics

This is not legal advice. Requirements depend on where you and your subscribers are.

  • Say what people are signing up for and how often you will send.
  • Link to a privacy notice if you have one; many providers require a physical address in the email footer.
  • Do not pre-tick consent boxes.
  • If you add Carrd analytics, decide whether you need a cookie notice; Carrd lists a native cookie-free analytics option among its integrations. [3]

Common problems and where to look

Accessible labels and error messages matter for signup forms as much as for contact forms; our label and error check covers how to test them.

  • Subscriber missing from the list: check the provider connection in the form settings and whether the list requires double opt-in confirmation first.
  • Confirmation email in spam: send from a domain address your provider has authenticated; see the domain move guide for SPF and DKIM records.
  • Form submits on desktop but not phone: test with a mobile browser and look for an error message on the field.
  • Duplicate subscribers: check whether the provider merges by email address.
  • Success message says nothing useful: rewrite it to tell the person to check their inbox.

When to skip Carrd's form entirely

If your email provider gives you a hosted signup page, linking to it from a Carrd button needs no form at all and works on any tier that allows links. That is a sensible choice on Pro Lite ($9 a year) if you do not need a custom domain, because Pro Lite does not include forms. You lose an inline form; you gain one less integration to maintain. [1]

We have not connected a Carrd form to any provider for this guide. Follow the provider's own documentation for consent and confirmation settings.
